You know that episode of Arrested Development where GOB walks into the apartment and his whole family is doing chicken impressions for each other, but he’s carrying a box and can’t join in? So he yells “OH MY GOD! HANGONIHAVETHEPERFECTTHING!” and runs into the other room to set the box down so he can do his chicken impression?

I imagine that’s exactly what it would have been like to be the guy who owns the captain america outfit yesterday.

Robots of Color (in Disguise)

So lately I’ve been watching a lot of Transformers, and was recently struck with this. When growing up, I thought of certain autobots as being black guys.. like, if they were human, they would be black dudes.

Obviously Jazz was one of these, he was voiced by genuine black person Scatman Crothers (RIP). This was somehow paid tribute to/made fun of in the 2007 movie by having Jazz sound like a “bibbity-boppity, yessuh massuh” black guy and promptly killed (RIP). The original was more of a wise jazzman stereotype, but whatever.

I also thought of Trailbreaker as being black. Although played by white fella Frank Welker, Welker has a ridiculously versatile voice (he’s the most prolific living actor in the world right now) and Trailbreaker was a black robot who transformed into a black car, so that makes sense.

What doesn’t make sense is I also always thought of Wheeljack as a black dude. Wheeljack is a red, white and gray robot that turns into a red, white and gray car and is voiced by couldn’t-be-whiter Chris Latta (Sadly also RIP)- the guy who also voiced Starscream and Cobra Commander.

In watching the show, Wheeljack is very OBVIOUSLY voiced by Latta.. he barely changes his voice at all.. Latta got a lot of work because he had a very distinctive voice, not because he had a versatile one. I have no idea why I have, for the last 25 years, thought of Wheeljack as a black dude. He displays absolutely no stereotypical african-american qualities (and stereotypes tend to be what sinks in when you’re four years old), his personality is more of a good-natured crackpot inventor a la doc brown in the cartoon. He would be a positive black role model, except he wasn’t voiced by, colored like, or portraying a black person.

I was a strange child.

You think they should be meaningful, you think they should be pretty, you think it’d be wise to invest your money in tattoo removal technology because in twenty years all these hipster idiots are going to come to their senses and realize that a shark wearing Ray-Bans and surfing the waves of your calf muscle is not conducive to, say, convincing your bank to let you take out a second mortgage on your nice three-bedroom in suburban Massachusetts.

There are better examples for ill-placed tattoo mistakes because when you’re trying to convince your bank to let you take out a second mortgage, you WON’T BE WEARING SHORTS, which is the only way a calf tattoo would show.

I mention this not to pick apart Liana, who is a wonderful blogger, but because I have a tattoo on my right calf that is ridiculous.

I have three other tattoos I love, but the calf tattoo I got after a ~~few~~ lot of bourbon in Washington DC’s DuPont Circle (and no I didn’t go to fvckin’ Jinx Proof you teenager). It was a weird spot on 17th St. I can’t remember the name of, but I can remember there was all sorts of torture equipment on the wall, so I was glad when when my test for Hep a few months later came back negative.

The tattoo is a picture of a ninja star with a red/yellow eye in the middle. One of my geeky LOTR friend’s says it’s the Eye of Sauran. It has no theme or story behind it. It’s just a dumb tattoo I got when I was drunk and young.

I don’t mind it though because you make mistakes in life, and best own up to them or you’ll never understand why people think you’re a dick.

Self-deprecation indeed.

I like that tattoo.

This is a Walther P-38. It was the service pistol of the German Weirmacht and was originally introduced in 1939. It is still in service today.

This is Megatron. He transforms into a toy Walther P-38 and was originally released in 1984. It has been reissued several times since.

Due to vastly differing definitions of the word “safety,” one of the above items is difficult to obtain in Japan, while the other is difficult to obtain in the United States.
